This book gets right to the point. Clear, easy to read and concise, it is a must-have for anyone who is or who will be applying to college. Extremely useful for parents of college bound students as well. I work as a parent coach and have met countless parents who automatically assume that the college application process must be filled with stress, anxiety, rejection, confusion and countless hours of work. Not to mention that many of the books out there aimed to help parents and students through this process are longer and more complex than the actual process itself. Consequently, many parents and students feel defeated and end up in a negative mindset right from the start. The Yaverbaums not only clearly illustrate that it does not need to be this way, they communicate how the process can actually be enjoyable and consequently more successful. The pearls of wisdom and advice given from numerous guidance counselors throughout the country are brief in length yet offer inmeasurable amounts of practical tools, information and direction. I learned more useful tips for my soon to be college-bound daughter from two short paragraphs than I have from any other source so far. Very often with important information “less is more.” This is certainly the case with this helpful book.

After reading this book, i realize how inefficient my application process was. if i had read this book a year ago, i would have been less stressed and more aptly equipped to handle the long and exhausting application process. after reading my fair share of lengthy college application guides, i have noticed a common characteristic; they are too long and they seem to be based ONLY on the perspective of adults and college guidance counselors, which, granted, is a point of view that must be explored. but they all lack advice that comes directly from students who are going through the application process as well. what life’s little college admission insights has that other college admission guides lack is a perfect balance between the necessary wisdom of guidance counselors and the curious nature of high school seniors, and in a manageable form that is a fraction of the size of the large bulky college guides. if you are applying to college then this book will not only simplify the seemingly endless and entirely overwhelming process, but it will reassure prospective college students that there are other students out there that are just as burdened.

The Yaverbaum’s “College Admissions Insights” is a jewel, a priceless compilation of the best minds in college admissions, brought together under one cover, specifically to give the reader a decided edge in the daunting process of college admissions.

For our family, with two teens, one close to college age, the other quickly approaching, our entire family took a sigh of relief as we read this book. Eric and Cole Yaverbaum pulled away the curtain of the intimidating college application process, and show us through their work that we are the customers, and that at the end of the day, the colleges and universities are looking for our children just the way they are. We also learned the importance of starting NOW, and that regardless of where we are in the process, to start becoming a person to the colleges our children are interested in, not just an application.

There’s more, so much more, and every piece of advice is priceless. For example, Apple Computer stock is now around $200, and not long ago is was selling around $12. Buying that stock would have yielded you an enormous return on your investment. I equate Life’s Little College Admissions Insights in the same light: a small cost today that will net you and your children HUGE benefits and gains in the future.

First, a disclosure. I am one of the college admissions counselors quoted in the book. But, if you want to get a jump start on finding the best college for you, this is the place to start. The book provides short quotes from college counselors that get right to the heart of finding the right college. The book is short and can be easily read in a hour. But that is the beauty of the book. No fluff, just great thoughts to help students. The other strong point of the book is that the advice given is appropriate for students looking at the most selective colleges as well as those looking to attend a local community college. Great first book if you are just starting the college admissions process.
