I just received the book Parent’s Guide to College and Careers by Barbara Cooke, M.A. the day before my oldest is about to graduate with a B.A. and a B.S., and my middle child is to graduate from high school two days later. Instead of cleaning my house for graduation guests, I read this book from cover to cover in a few hours. As an high school educator with thirty years of engaging students to think about the big picture, College and Careers is one of the most insightful and compact texts I have encountered. Cooke puts everything in this book; career paths, understanding job projection information, college major choices, and puts college loan debt to income information into the most easy to read language I’ve read. Twenty First Century Skills For Students is an educational initiative at my high school. This educational study group has already read The World is Flat and I will be asking that our school purchase a copy of College and Careers for every member of this team.

This book was a lifesaver for my husband and me. Our son is finishing up his junior year in high school and we are so grateful to have read this book. It is easy to navigate – you can read certain specific chapters pertinent to your family’s situation, jump around, or read straight through. I know that we are way ahead of the game. For instance Cooke instructs that “for many jobs, work experience trumps college major.” His selection of major now is up to him and an area that we don’t need to be too concerned about – we can support him in that decision. We now have, thanks to this book, a clear understanding of which areas to guide him and which areas to let go.
