Soccer College Recruiting – Three Critical Steps to Getting a Scholarship

If you feel like you are in the dark when it comes to soccer college recruiting, you need to pay attention to this article. There is a lot of competition out there for the limited number of soccer scholarships which are available. Having the right information can be your edge to getting noticed and being recruited.

Although professional soccer has never really caught on in America, high school soccer has seen an explosion in popularity. With the explosion of high school soccer, there are more kids than ever who want to play soccer at the college level. Therefore, soccer college recruiting has gotten more and more competitive.

The current stats show that only about 5% to 7% of all high school soccer players will make it to the college level. obviously, with those kind of numbers, the odds are not in your favor as you strive to get recruited. The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to be among the best 5% to 7% of all players in the country to make it to the college level! Why? Because many of the best players will always fly under the radar, coaches will never know who they are, and they will therefore never be recruited!

If you are among the best high school soccer players, maybe in the top 15% or so, the door is wide open for you to step in and get a scholarship or at least a partial scholarship. Currently the NCAA offers 9.9 scholarships for men at the Division I level and 12 for women. At the Division II level, there are 9 scholarships for men and 9.9 for women. Division III does not offer scholarships, but they do offer financial aid. The NAIA offers 12 scholarships for both men and women. And finally the NJCAA (Junior Colleges) offers 18 scholarships for both men and women. Most of these scholarships are divided up as partial scholarships. Only the top 2% or so of high school soccer players will get a full scholarship.

What does all these soccer college recruiting facts and numbers mean for you? They mean that the door is wide open if you will take responsibility for your own recruitment and:

  1. Write an athletic resume full of your stats and best accomplishments
  2. Market and Promote Yourself correctly to college coaches
  3. Make sure college coaches know who you are and what you can do for them

If getting noticed by college soccer coaches is your goal, you can make it happen. You don’t have to be a super star athlete to get ahead in the soccer college recruiting game. You can simply be a good player who becomes very good at promoting and marketing yourself.
